Eastern Congo Mine Collapse Leaves Hundreds Dead
A landslide at a coltan mining site in eastern Congo claimed the lives of at least 200 people, rebel authorities reported Saturday. The collapse occurred Wednesday at the Rubaya mines, located in North-Kivu province and controlled by the M23 rebels, according to Lumumba Kambere Muyisa, the spokesperson for the rebel-appointed governor. Muyisa told The Associated Press that heavy rains triggered the landslide. "For now, there are more than 200 dead, some of whom are still in the mud and have not yet been recovered," Muyisa stated. The Rubaya mines are a major coltan mining site in the region.
