UK's Top Taxpayers Include Celebrities and Business Tycoons
London - The UK's highest taxpayers list, released annually by the Sunday Times, revealed the individuals and families who contributed the most to the country's tax revenue. Fred and Peter Done, the billionaire brothers behind the gambling giant Betfred, topped the list for the first time, with an estimated tax bill of £400.1 million over the past year, according to BBC Business.
The list also featured prominent figures from the entertainment and sports industries. Harry Styles, the former One Direction member-turned-solo artist, appeared on the list for the first time. Anthony Joshua, the British boxer, and author JK Rowling were also among the top taxpayers. Manchester City's Erling Haaland, at number 72, was the youngest person on the list with a projected £16.9 million tax payment, while Liverpool's Mo Salah was believed to have a £14.5 million bill.
The release of the list coincided with the final day for self-assessment tax returns in the UK. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) extended phone line and webchat services to assist individuals filing their 2024-25 tax returns. Millions of self-employed individuals and those with multiple income sources were required to file online by the end of January. According to BBC Business, approximately 1.1 million people missed the deadline the previous year. HMRC stated that reasonable excuses for missing the deadline, such as serious illness or a close family bereavement, would be considered to avoid fines.
