Murders and Arson Cases Unveiled in Illinois and Virginia
Two separate cases involving murder and suspected arson are under investigation in Illinois and Virginia, according to CBS News reports. The investigations center around the deaths of Melissa Lamesch in Illinois and Katlyn Lyon Montgomery in Virginia.
In Mt. Morris, Illinois, responders were called to a house fire on November 25, 2020, the day before Thanksgiving, where they discovered the body of 27-year-old Melissa Lamesch. Initially, investigators were unsure if the fire was accidental, but a closer examination led them to believe foul play was involved. According to investigators, there were no electrical issues at the house, and the oven and stove burners were off. An autopsy revealed no soot in Lamesch's lungs and normal carbon monoxide levels, but signs of strangulation were present, leading investigators to conclude she was murdered before the fire started. The fire was allegedly staged to cover up the murder. Before her death, Lamesch spoke with her sister, Cassie Baal, about her excitement about the future and the upcoming arrival of her baby boy. Baal recalled Lamesch saying during the call, "You gotta be kidding me. He's freaking here again. I told him he's gotta stop doing this."
In Virginia, authorities investigated the death of Katlyn Lyon Montgomery, who was found unconscious in her apartment on October 7, 2022. Her roommate, Jacob Piercy, called 911 after Montgomery's daughter, Milani, alerted him that something was wrong. Medical staff at the hospital noticed injuries on Montgomery's head and neck, leading investigators to suspect foul play rather than a drug overdose, as initially suspected. Lead investigator Robbie Burnette with Virginia's Bedford County Sheriff's Office determined Montgomery had been murdered. Crystal Sale, Montgomery's mother, recounted the harrowing experience of seeing her daughter at the hospital, stating, "I walk into the hospital...saw my daughter there...And I watched them do CPR and...I'll never forget that." Montgomery was strangled days after breaking up with her boyfriend. Her sister, Sherry Cox, cared for Montgomery's daughter, Milani, while periodically checking in on Katlyn in the hospital.
