Democrat Taylor Rehmet defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss in a special election for the Texas State Senate District 9 seat in Tarrant County, according to complete but unofficial returns, marking a major political upset in what is considered the largest Republican county in the nation. The election took place on Saturday.
Rehmet, a union president in Fort Worth, garnered 54,267 votes, approximately 57% of the total, while Wambsganss, a longtime conservative activist, received 40,598 votes, or about 43%, according to CBS News.
In remarks delivered late Saturday night at his watch party in Fort Worth, Rehmet addressed the significance of his victory. "This isn't red versus blue; this is right versus wrong," Rehmet said. "This is about public school funding. This is about helping working folks. This is about lowering costs. This is about everyday folks. The results are testament to the hard work that we've put in."
In another special election in Texas on Saturday, Democrat Christian Menefee won a U.S. House seat. Menefee, the Harris County attorney, prevailed in a runoff against Amanda Edwards, a former Houston City Council member. He will replace the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, a former Houston mayor, who died in March 2025.
