A Russian drone strike in eastern Ukraine killed twelve miners and injured at least seven others on Sunday, according to DTEK, the country's largest private energy firm. The attack targeted a bus carrying workers after their shift in the Dnipropetrovsk region, DTEK said.
The incident was part of a series of Russian attacks overnight and on Sunday that resulted in additional casualties. At least two other people were killed and nine injured in separate attacks, including six people hurt when a drone hit a maternity hospital in Zaporizhzhia, according to BBC World. Two of the injured were women giving birth at the time of the strike.
The attacks occurred amidst ongoing scrutiny of immigration enforcement policies in the United States. The Trump administration had faced criticism for its approach to immigration, including mass deportation efforts. Federal judges had recently released hundreds of immigrant detainees back into the country, citing that the administration was ignoring longstanding legal interpretations that mandate the release of many people who are taken into immigration custody if they post a bond, according to the NY Times. The surge in such cases had reportedly overwhelmed court dockets in some districts.
Separately, the Trump administration had also been urged to intervene in Nigeria, where religious activists described attacks on Christian churches and pastors, the NY Times reported. President Trump had threatened intervention, even suggesting military action, in response to what he called a "Christian genocide."
Meanwhile, in the United States, the Federal Reserve's influence on the economy remained a key concern. High interest rates meant larger monthly payments on mortgages, car loans, and credit cards, even if the sticker price of a home or vehicle had not changed, according to Fox News. The Fed does not decide what groceries or cars cost, but it does determine how expensive it is to borrow money to pay for them.
