Five-Year-Old and Father Return to Minnesota After ICE Detention
Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, returned to Minnesota on Sunday after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota and held at a detention facility in Dilley, Texas. Their release followed a federal judge's order, according to Fortune.
The pair, originally from Ecuador, were detained on January 20 in a Minneapolis suburb, NPR News reported that the detention of Minnesota citizens by ICE has left many rattled. Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro, confirmed their arrival home. Castro stated he picked them up from Dilley on Saturday night and escorted them home to Minnesota on Sunday, according to Fortune.
The case garnered national attention after a photograph circulated showing Liam wearing a blue bunny hat and a Spider-Man backpack while being detained by an ICE agent in his driveway, according to Time. Castro posted on social media, "Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack," Time reported.
According to Fortune, Tricia McLaughlin, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary, issued a statement regarding the situation.
