UK, US and Other Countries Discuss Critical Mineral Alliance
Washington D.C. - Ministers from approximately 20 countries, including G7 states, convened in Washington this week to discuss a strategic alliance concerning critical minerals, according to The Guardian. The summit included representatives from the US, EU, UK, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
The meeting is viewed as an effort to mend transatlantic relations that have been strained and to establish alliances aimed at reducing reliance on China. Discussions included calls for the US to guarantee a minimum price for rare earths.
In other news, Fred and Peter Done, founders of the gambling company Betfred, topped the Sunday Times Tax List as the UK's biggest taxpayers, paying an estimated £400.1 million in taxes over the past year, according to BBC Business. The list also featured prominent figures such as Harry Styles, Anthony Joshua, and JK Rowling. Manchester City's Erling Haaland, 25, was the youngest individual on the list, projected to pay £16.9 million in taxes, while Liverpool's Mo Salah's tax bill was believed to be £14.5 million.

In other news, plaintiffs in a case against North Korea say they were lured from Japan, exploited for labour and cut off from families for generations. The court has ordered North Korea to pay each plaintiff 20m yen in compensation. Eiko Kawasaki, who was among tens of thousands of people with Korean heritage who had been lured to the communist state by the promise of a paradise, left Japan more than six decades ago.
