Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, are gearing up to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, while the gaming world sees both a remake of a classic and changes to popular franchises. The Winter Olympics will commence on February 4, 2026, marking the third time Italy has hosted the winter competition, following the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Games and the 2006 Turin Games, according to Wired. There will be 116 medal events across 16 sports.
In gaming news, Square Enix released a remake of "Dragon Quest VII," which The Verge reports is designed to be approachable for newcomers to the long-running series. Andrew Webster of The Verge noted that with nearly a dozen mainline titles and numerous spin-offs, finding a starting point in the "Dragon Quest" series can be daunting for new players.
Meanwhile, Firaxis Games, the developers of "Civilization VII," are planning a spring update called "Test of Time" to address criticisms of the game, Ars Technica reported. According to Ars Technica, some players felt that the initial release "didn't feel like a Civilization game." Ed Beach, the Civilization franchise's creative director, and Dennis Shirk, its executive producer, spoke about the changes being made to rethink unpopular mechanics.
Paradox Interactive announced a change in developers for "Cities: Skylines 2" in November, with Colossal Order ceasing work on the series, Ars Technica reported. Iceflake, the new developer, is prioritizing visual improvements and user interface updates in its first major patch, according to a City Corner Developer Diary. Iceflake acknowledged that the game's user interface "can sometimes be a bit confus[ing]."
