North Sea Ship Captain Found Guilty in Tanker Collision Death
A cargo ship captain, Vladimir Motin, 59, from St. Petersburg, Russia, was found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with a 2025 North Sea collision between his ship, the Solong, and the US tanker Stena Immaculate, according to the BBC. The incident, which occurred off the coast of East Yorkshire on March 10, 2025, resulted in the death of Mark Angelo Pernia, 38, a crew member on the Solong, who is presumed dead.
The trial at the Old Bailey in London revealed that Motin, who was the only person on watch duty at the time of the collision, failed to maintain a proper lookout and did not utilize all available resources to assess the risk of a collision or allow sufficient time for evasive maneuvers, the BBC reported.
