Musk Merges SpaceX and xAI Amidst Epstein Email Controversy
Elon Musk merged SpaceX with xAI, the artificial intelligence company that also owns X, according to an announcement made on February 2, 2026. The move aims to create "the most ambitious, vertically-integrated innovation engine on (and off) Earth, with AI, rockets, space-based internet, direct-to-mobile device communications and the world's foremost real-time information and free speech platform," Musk stated.
The merger comes as Musk faces scrutiny over recently released emails indicating he sought an invitation to Jeffrey Epstein's island. According to The Verge, experts suggest these revelations could pose a risk to Musk's plans to take the combined SpaceX/xAI company public. The Department of Justice released the documents related to Epstein last week.
Andrew J. Hawkins of The Verge noted that the emails add "risk to his plans to merge SpaceX with xAI, and then take the combined company public."
The newly merged entity will integrate AI, rocket technology, space-based internet services, direct-to-mobile device communications, and the X platform. The stated goal is to create a comprehensive innovation ecosystem spanning both terrestrial and extraterrestrial domains.
