Clintons Agree to Testify in Epstein Investigation, Avoiding Contempt Vote
Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton agreed to testify before the House Oversight Committee regarding its investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, averting a potential contempt of Congress vote. The Clintons' legal team informed the committee of their decision in an email on Monday, stating they "accept the terms of your letter and will appear for depositions on mutually agreeable dates," according to CBS News.
The agreement came after the Clintons had resisted congressional subpoenas for six months, according to ABC News. The House was expected to vote on two contempt of Congress resolutions against the Clintons as early as Wednesday, until the agreement was reached on Monday evening.
Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, who chairs the oversight panel, confirmed the agreement in a statement late Monday. "The Clintons' counsel has said they agree to appear for depositions," Comer said, according to CBS News. The email from the Clintons' legal team also requested confirmation that the House would not move forward with contempt proceedings, "as the Chairman stated in his letter this morning," CBS News reported.
The House Oversight Committee is investigating the extent of the Clintons' relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The Justice Department recently released a massive trove of Epstein files, including 3 million documents and photos, according to CBS News. The released materials include photos, videos, court records, FBI and DOJ documents, news clippings, and emails. Some files mention prominent figures, like President Trump, former President Bill Clinton and billionaire Elon Musk, who have not been tied to wrongdoing, CBS News reported. The Epstein Files Transparency Act required the DOJ to produce its files related to the late sex offender and his co-conspirator.
The dates for the Clintons' depositions have yet to be determined.
