SpaceX, Elon Musk's space exploration company, is acquiring xAI, his artificial intelligence startup known for its Grok chatbot, according to a memo posted on SpaceX's website. The deal aims to create an "innovation engine" combining AI, rockets, space-based internet, and media under one roof, according to Musk.
The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. However, a source familiar with the deal told Reuters that the acquisition valued xAI at $125 billion and SpaceX at $1 trillion, potentially making it the most valuable private company ever.
This move comes as AI continues to transform social media and other online platforms. Recently, a social media network called Moltbook was launched in late January by Matt Schlicht, head of commerce platform Octane AI. Moltbook is designed for AI to post, comment, and create communities, called "submolts," similar to subreddits on Reddit. Humans are welcome to observe, but cannot post.
The rise of AI-generated content on social media has also led to a backlash. Théodore, who was not further identified, described an AI-generated image of impoverished South Asian children with deformities asking for likes that went viral on Facebook. "It boggled my mind," Théodore said, expressing dismay at the popularity of such content.
In other news from the aviation industry, Air India grounded a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner jet after a pilot reported a possible defect in the aircraft's fuel control switch, according to the airline. The airline stated on Monday that it had informed India's aviation regulator about the issue and was checking the pilot's concerns on a "priority basis." A Boeing spokesperson confirmed they were in contact with Air India and supporting their review of the matter. The grounding comes amid an ongoing investigation into a plane crash last June involving an Air India aircraft of the same model.
