EV Battery Demand Soars, While AI Social Network Creates Buzz in Silicon Valley
Global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and the batteries that power them surged in 2025, while an AI social network called Moltbook grabbed attention in Silicon Valley, according to recent reports. The EV market experienced significant growth, with EVs accounting for over a quarter of new vehicle sales globally, a substantial increase from less than 5% in 2020, according to MIT Technology Review.
In some regions, the adoption rate was even higher. China saw more than 50% of new vehicle sales being battery electric or plug-in hybrids last year. Europe also witnessed a surge in purely electric vehicle sales, surpassing gas-powered vehicles in December, MIT Technology Review reported. The United States, however, lagged behind, experiencing a slight sales decline from 2024, which dragged down the global average.
Meanwhile, Moltbook, an AI social network, became a topic of discussion in Silicon Valley. Bryan Walsh, a senior editorial director at Vox, reported that AI agents on the network had seemingly started a religion.
In other news, the Energy Star program at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emerged stronger after facing attempts to eliminate it during the Trump administration, NPR News reported. Bipartisan budget legislation, signed into law by President Trump, provided dedicated funding to strengthen the energy efficiency program. Jeff Brady of NPR News noted that such policy reversals were rare during the Trump administration. The pushback against ending Energy Star came from various stakeholders, including industries.
In Washington D.C., Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed fellow city leaders at the annual U.S. Conference of Mayors, expressing concerns about the Trump Administration's policies, Time reported. "We are on the front line of a very important battle," Frey said, referencing the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis. "If we do not speak up, if we do not step out, it will be your city that is next." Frey's remarks highlighted the anxiety among mayors across the country regarding the potential impact of the Trump Administration's actions on their communities.
Additionally, advancements in quantum technology continued to progress. Nature reported on long-lived remote ion-ion entanglement for scalable quantum repeaters. Quantum repeaters, incorporating entanglement swapping and entanglement purification with quantum memories, offer a promising means to overcome limitations in fibre-based quantum networks, according to Nature.
