SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, acquired xAI, Musk's artificial intelligence startup, to create space-based data centers, the company announced Monday. Musk stated in a memo on SpaceX's website that current AI advancements rely on large terrestrial data centers that require significant power and cooling. He added that global electricity demand for AI cannot be met with terrestrial solutions without negatively impacting communities and the environment.
Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous vehicle company, raised $16 billion to expand its driverless taxicab fleet to over a dozen new cities internationally, including London and Tokyo, according to a blog post on Monday. The funding round, led by Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global, and Sequoia Capital, values Waymo at $126 billion. Parent company Alphabet remains the majority investor.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology published new safety rules on Monday that will ban hidden, electronically actuated door handles on cars sold in the country, a design popularized by Tesla. The new rules, effective January 1, 2027, require all doors (excluding the tailgate) to have mechanically released external door handles, as well as a mechanical release on the interior of the vehicle. Avalanche is developing a small-scale nuclear fusion reactor, according to TechCrunch. Co-founder and CEO Robin Langtry stated that the company is using the small size to learn and iterate quickly. Fusion power aims to provide the world with clean heat and electricity by heating and compressing plasma for atoms to fuse and release energy.
