One Million Miss UK Tax Return Deadline, Face Penalties
An estimated one million people in the United Kingdom missed the deadline to file their tax returns and now face penalties, according to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The deadline for 2024-25 returns was at midnight on Saturday.
HMRC reported that 27,456 people filed in the final hour before the deadline. The busiest hour for online self-assessment submissions was between 17:00 GMT and 18:00 GMT on Saturday. In total, 475,722 people filed on the final day, contributing to a total of approximately 11.5 million submissions. While the number of late filers is significant, it is still below the 11.48 million people who filed on time.
X Offices Raided in France, UK Investigates Grok
In other news, the French offices of Elon Musk's social media company X were raided by the Paris prosecutor's cyber-crime unit. The raid is part of an investigation into suspected offenses, including unlawful data extraction and complicity in the possession of child pornography. The prosecutor's office stated that both Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino have been summoned to appear at hearings in April. X has yet to respond to the investigation.
Separately, the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) announced a probe into Musk's AI tool, Grok, over its "potential to produce harmful sexualised image and video content."
EU Open to Discussing Closer Trade Ties with UK
The European Union is "openminded" about discussing closer trade ties with the UK, including the possibility of working together on a customs union, according to European Commissioner for finance Valdis Dombrovskis. Speaking after high-level talks with ministers including Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Dombrovskis said the bloc was "ready to engage" if the UK wanted to explore the move, an idea Labour has faced growing pressure to consider. He also suggested that Britain and the EU could remove "most" food checks between the UK and the bloc and opened the door to Britain entering the EU's 150 billion euro defense fund.
Last US-Russia Nuclear Treaty Expiring
The New START treaty, the last of the nuclear arms control treaties between the United States and Russia, is set to expire on Thursday. The treaty, signed in 2010 by then-US President Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, was a 10-year agreement. While Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested informally capping the number of warheads for another year, US President Donald Trump has yet to respond.
Air India Flight Grounded After Possible Defect
An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was grounded after reports of a "possible defect" with a fuel control switch. The incident was reported on flight AI132 from Heathrow to Bengaluru on Monday. Sky News has seen paperwork, logged by one of the pilots, highlighting a potential fault with a switch that is at the center of an investigation into the Air India Flight 171 crash. Air India said it was getting "the pilot's concerns checked on a priority basis." The same model of aircraft crashed in Ahmedabad last June.
