French Prosecutors Raid X Offices, Summon Elon Musk Amid Investigation
Parisian prosecutors raided the offices of social media platform X on Tuesday as part of a preliminary investigation into allegations including spreading child sexual abuse images and deepfakes. The cybercrime unit of the Paris prosecutors office, along with the French national cyber unit and European Union police agency Europol, conducted the search, according to Time. Billionaire owner Elon Musk was also summoned to attend a hearing in April.
The investigation focuses on suspected abuse of algorithms, allegations related to deepfake images, and concerns over posts generated by X's AI chatbot, Grok, Time reported. Chief prosecutor Laure Beccuau stated that the search was carried out with the objective of ensuring the compliance of the X platform with French law, particularly concerning Grok, designed by xAI, which she said has led to the dissemination of illegal content.
X and Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI also face intensifying scrutiny from Britain's data privacy regulator, which opened formal investigations into how they handled personal data when they developed and deployed Musk's artificial intelligence, according to NPR News.
