US Navy Downs Iranian Drone in Arabian Sea Amid Rising Tensions
The US military announced Tuesday it shot down an Iranian-owned drone in the Arabian Sea. The incident occurred amid increased American military presence in the region to counter air threats and secure shipping routes, according to Euronews.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated recently, prompting the increased military activity. CENTCOM commander Gen. Brad Cooper stated that Iran's "continued nuisance and threats in international waters and airspace would no longer be tolerated," Euronews reported. Capt. Tim Hawkins, a CENTCOM spokesperson, provided details of the military confrontation on Tuesday.
In a separate incident in the Strait of Hormuz, a US-flagged tanker, the Stena Imperative, was approached and challenged by Iranian gunboats. According to Euronews, the tanker was approached by three pairs of small armed boats belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, approximately 30km north of Oman. The British maritime security firm Vanguard Tech reported the incident, stating, "The vessel is now being escorted by a US warship." The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations also confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, in other news, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was grounded at Heathrow Airport on Monday after reports of a "possible defect" with a fuel control switch. Sky News reported that the potential fault was on the same model of aircraft that crashed in Ahmedabad last June. Air India stated it was getting "the pilot's concerns checked on a priority basis" after the incident reported on flight AI132 from Heathrow to Bengaluru.
