Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, was assassinated on Monday near the city of Zintan in western Libya, according to Libyan media reports. Saif al-Islam, 53, had been living in Zintan since 2011, initially in prison and later as a free man after 2017, according to Al Jazeera.

Marcel Ceccaldi, Saif al-Islam's French lawyer, told AFP that the identity of the assailants remained unknown. "For now, we don't know" who was behind the killing, Ceccaldi said, according to Euronews.
Saif al-Islam was captured in 2011 and held in prison until 2017, Al Jazeera reported. He was the second son of Muammar Gaddafi.
