US Tanker Challenged by Iranian Gunboats in Strait of Hormuz
A US-flagged tanker, the Stena Imperative, was approached and challenged by Iranian gunboats in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, according to a British maritime security firm. The incident occurred approximately 30 kilometers north of Oman.
Vanguard Tech reported that three pairs of small armed boats belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards approached the Stena Imperative as it transited the Strait of Hormuz. The tanker continued on its journey as planned and is now being escorted by a US warship, according to the company. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations also acknowledged the incident.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and is a vital route for global oil supplies. Incidents involving Iranian vessels and foreign ships in the area have occurred in the past, raising concerns about maritime security.
