Trump Engages in Diplomatic and Political Activities Amidst Global Concerns
Donald Trump engaged in a series of diplomatic and political activities recently, including a meeting with the Colombian president and participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, while a new report highlighted concerns about a global "democratic recession."
Trump met with Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House, resulting in an agreement to tackle drug trafficking, according to Trump. This meeting came after months of hostile remarks exchanged between the two leaders. Despite the prior insults, the meeting concluded with "pleasantries, autographs and a Maga cap," according to The Guardian.
In Davos, Trump launched his Board of Peace, which includes several far-right leaders such as Argentina's Javier Milei and Hungary's Viktor Orbán, The Guardian reported.
These activities occurred against a backdrop of global concerns about human rights and democratic backsliding. Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report stating that the world is in a "democratic recession," with almost three-quarters of the global population living under autocratic rulers, levels not seen since the 1980s, according to The Guardian. The report cited growing authoritarianism and abuses in the US, Russia, and China as threats to the global rules-based order.
In other global news, a small number of sick and wounded Palestinians were allowed to cross into Egypt through the Rafah border crossing after Israel permitted a limited reopening of the border. According to Egyptian officials, about 150 people were due to leave the territory and 50 to enter it. However, Reuters reported that Israel had permitted only 12 Palestinians to re-enter by nightfall.
Meanwhile, in Madagascar, Tropical Cyclone Fytia caused flooding that affected nearly 30,000 people and killed at least three. The storm, the first tropical storm of the season, may bring 150mm of rain, and it is estimated that more than 40,000 homes could be flooded, The Guardian reported.
