The crew, fleeing from the navy, tossed 116 rectangular packages containing the drugs into the sea, naval officials said. In Los Angeles County, the death of former NFL player Kevin Johnson is possibly linked to three other homicides of unhoused people in the Willowbrook area, according to Los Angeles County detectives. Johnson, 55, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders in the 1990s, was found dead on January 21 at an encampment in the 1300 block of E. 120th Street. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that he died from "blunt head trauma and stab wounds." The L.A. County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that "between October 2025 and January 2026, four homicides occurred in this area and remain under active investigation by the Homicide Bureau."
Overseas, off the eastern Aegean island of Chios, a collision between a speedboat carrying migrants and a Greek coast guard patrol vessel resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people, the coast guard reported late Tuesday. The bodies of 14 people – 11 men and three women – were recovered from the sea, while another 25 migrants, including about 11 children, were rescued and transported to a hospital on Chios, as were two coast guard officers who were injured in the incident. One of the injured women later died in hospital, bringing the total death toll to at least 15.
