Multiple Tragedies Unfold Across the Globe: Ukraine Faces Power Outages, Gaza Suffers Israeli Strikes, and Migrant Deaths Spark Controversy
A series of tragic events unfolded across the globe, ranging from renewed Russian strikes in Ukraine leaving thousands without power to Israeli strikes in Gaza resulting in multiple fatalities, and a migrant boat collision off the Greek coast raising questions about official accounts.
In Ukraine, thousands were left without power as Russia renewed its attacks targeting the country's energy sector, according to BBC World. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that over 200 repair crews were working to restore power in Kyiv, where more than 1,100 apartment buildings remained without electricity. The attacks followed a week-long pause that US President Donald Trump had asked Vladimir Putin to observe as a fierce cold swept Ukraine. Communal kitchens and heating centers were established in Kyiv to support residents without power and heating.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, Israeli strikes resulted in the deaths of at least 20 Palestinians, including several children and a paramedic, according to hospital officials. Almost 40 others were wounded. The Israeli military stated that the "precise strikes" targeted "terrorists" who opened fire on troops in the north of the Gaza strip, seriously wounding an officer. The military added that the attack occurred close to the Yellow Line, beyond which Israeli forces are stationed, and constituted a "blatant violation." Several of those killed were brought to Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis.
Off the coast of Greece, the deaths of 15 Afghan and Moroccan migrants after a speedboat carrying them collided with a Greek coastguard vessel sparked controversy. Greek authorities blamed "smugglers" for the incident, stating they "failed to comply with the Hellenic Coast Guard's visual and audible signals" to turn their boat around. The coast guard claimed the migrant boat made dangerous maneuvers before veering into a patrol vessel off the Chios Strait. However, early accounts of the incident have been questioned, according to BBC World. Twenty-four others were injured in the incident.
