Spotify Enhances Lyrics Feature with Offline Access and Translations
Spotify announced Wednesday updates to its built-in song lyrics feature, including global availability of lyric translations, offline viewing for premium subscribers, and a relocated feature within the app. The changes aim to enhance user experience and potentially drive free users to upgrade to premium subscriptions.
Lyric translations, initially introduced in 2022 but previously limited to specific markets, are now available to all users globally, according to The Verge. This expansion allows users to understand song lyrics in different languages.
A key new feature is the ability to view lyrics offline, but this will be exclusive to Premium subscribers, TechCrunch reported. Spotify hopes this added benefit will incentivize free users to upgrade their accounts.
The lyrics feature will also be relocated within the app, appearing directly beneath the album artwork or the short. This adjustment is intended to make lyrics more easily accessible to users.
These changes follow previous adjustments to the lyrics feature, including a period in 2024 when Spotify experimented with paywalling lyrics before reversing course after user complaints, according to TechCrunch. The company is now focusing on offering exclusive features to Premium subscribers to encourage upgrades.
