National Guard Shooting Suspect to be Arraigned as NYC Antisemitic Incidents Surge
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in connection with the November shooting of two West Virginia National Guard members near the White House, according to ABC News. The incident resulted in the death of Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, who succumbed to her injuries on Nov. 26, the day before Thanksgiving. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe was also severely wounded, suffering a gunshot wound to the head and remains in recovery.
Lakanwal faces nine charges, including first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill, and illegal possession of a firearm, ABC News reported. He has pleaded not guilty. Lakanwal previously worked with the CIA in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, in New York City, antisemitic incidents have seen a dramatic increase, according to Fox News. Police data released on Tuesday revealed that anti-Jewish hate crimes soared 182% in January, with 31 reported incidents compared to 11 in January 2025. These incidents accounted for more than half of all hate crimes in January, which stood at 56, an increase of 152% over the same period last year. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for the New York and New Jersey region called the 182% spike "staggering," Fox News reported.
In other news, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused KTLA, a Los Angeles-based news station, of "dishonest reporting" after the station's coverage of an immigration-related arrest, according to Fox News. KTLA reported on Monday that local residents were "outraged and devastated" by what the station described as an "immigration raid on L.A. church grounds" at the North Hills United Methodist Church, where "a beloved community member" was arrested on Thursday.
