Ryan Routh Sentenced to Life in Prison for Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump
Ryan Routh was sentenced to life in prison plus seven years on Wednesday for attempting to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in September 2024 at Trump's West Palm Beach, Florida golf club. U.S. Judge Aileen Cannon handed down the sentence after Routh was convicted on five federal criminal counts in September, including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple firearms offenses, according to ABC News and Fox News.
Cannon rebuked Routh's actions, calling him an "evil" man, WPBF, West Palm Beach ABC affiliate, reported. The additional seven years were issued based on the second count of the indictment, ABC News stated. Cannon also praised the actions of law enforcement and witnesses for bringing Routh to justice, saying, "Despite all the evil we see, there is a sliver of hope, a sliver of light."
Fox News reported that prosecutors pushed for the 59-year-old Routh to receive a lengthy sentence. Following the guilty verdict last September, U.S. Marshals had to restrain Routh, according to Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett. Jarrett argued that the evidence against Routh was "obvious, overwhelming."
