Meta expanded its Hyperion AI data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, purchasing roughly 1,400 acres adjacent to its existing 2,250-acre site, Fortune reported. The combined land parcels will make the campus more than twice the size of Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans.
The expansion paves the way for a phase 2 of the Hyperion project, which has been widely discussed as one of the nation's largest AI data centers, according to Fortune. Active work was observed on the newly acquired land.
In other news, Kilo, an AI coding startup, launched Kilo CLI 1.0, a command-line tool supporting over 500 AI models, including those from Alibaba's Qwen, VentureBeat reported. The release came weeks after Kilo launched a Slackbot powered by MiniMax, allowing developers to ship code directly from Slack.
Meanwhile, Pinterest fired two employees who created a tool for tracking the company's layoffs, Fortune reported. In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the owner of the Eagle Mine, the only active nickel mine in the US, began testing a new process to extract more nickel, MIT Technology Review reported. The process, developed by the startup Allonnia, involves mixing a fermentation-derived broth with concentrated ore to capture and remove impurities, allowing nickel production from lower-quality ore. Kent Sorenson, Allonnia's chief technology officer, said this approach could help companies continue operating sites with declining ore quality.
