Former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn launched his campaign for an open U.S. House seat in Maryland Wednesday, vowing to dismantle what he described as Donald Trump's immigration regime, according to Time. Dunn, who was present at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, is making his second run for Congress in three years.
Dunn's announcement coincided with news from Minneapolis, where White House border czar Tom Homan announced the withdrawal of 700 federal immigration agents after a month-long enforcement surge, Time reported. Homan stated the drawdown was facilitated by "unprecedented cooperation between federal and local officials." The departing agents were drawn from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), but approximately 2,000 federal law enforcement officers would remain in the area, according to Homan. "This is smart law enforcement, not less law enforcement," he said, adding that a complete pullback of federal agents would depend on Minnesota’s cooperation.
Dunn drew a direct comparison between the actions of the immigration agents and the events of January 6th. "They are terrorizing people more than serving," Dunn said of the immigration agents, according to Time. "And law enforcement is supposed to be about serving. That is not what we are seeing now."
