Search Intensifies for Nancy Guthrie as Family Pleads for Her Safe Return
The search for Nancy Guthrie, 84, mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie, intensified as authorities investigated her disappearance from her Tucson, Arizona, home over the weekend. The Pima County Sheriff's Department, leading the investigation, stated Wednesday that no suspect or person of interest had been identified in what they are treating as a crime, according to CBS News.
In an emotional video released Wednesday night, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings, Camron and Annie Guthrie, pleaded for their mother's safe return. "Please, reach out to us," Savannah Guthrie urged, acknowledging reports of a ransom note. "However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her," she added, emphasizing the family's willingness to communicate with whoever may be holding her mother. "We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen."
Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her home. A small amount of blood found inside the residence was being tested, a law enforcement source familiar with the case told CBS News. "Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie," the sheriff's department said in a statement.
The disappearance has deeply affected the Tucson community. Sally Shamrell, a family friend and former reporter for KVOA, a local television station where Savannah Guthrie began her career, described the situation as "absolutely heart-wrenching." Shamrell told CBS News that the Guthries are a "very revered family" in Tucson, noting their positive contributions to the community. "Nancy and Savannah have both contributed so much to the Tucson community," Shamrell said. "... They're just positive contributors and very faithful women." A candlelight service was held Wednesday night in Tucson to pray for Nancy Guthrie's safe return.
Detectives are working closely with the Guthrie family as the investigation continues. The family emphasized Nancy Guthrie's character in their plea for her return. "Our mom is a kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness," Savannah Guthrie said.
