Storm Leonardo Kills One, Causes Havoc in Spain and Portugal
Storm Leonardo brought torrential rain and floods to the Iberian Peninsula on Wednesday, resulting in at least one death in Portugal and widespread disruption in Spain. A man in his 60s died in southeastern Portugal after being swept away by floodwaters while attempting to drive across a flooded area, according to the national civil protection authority. "A vehicle was found with one occupant, so there is one death," a spokesman said.
The storm forced thousands of evacuations, shut down schools, and cancelled trains across the region, Euronews reported. In Grazalema, Spain, more than 470 liters of rain had already fallen, overwhelming underground channels and causing river water to flood the streets. Approximately 60 residents from low-lying neighborhoods were evacuated, with the mayor warning that homes further uphill could be affected later on Wednesday, February 5th. The region remains under red alert, with up to 150 liters per square meter still expected and winds reaching 80 kmh, Euronews stated.
Leonardo is the latest in a series of storms to impact Spain and Portugal this year. Severe weather had already killed five people and injured hundreds in Portugal last week, Euronews reported.
