Colossal Biosciences announced on February 3rd that it is collaborating to preserve the DNA of 10,000 animal species facing extinction, while other research explores skin regeneration and the evolution of AI tools.
Colossal Biosciences aims to safeguard the genetic information of numerous species threatened by extinction, with approximately 30% of known species projected to vanish by 2050, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. The company previously engineered the return of the dire wolf after 10,000 years of extinction, according to Time.
In regenerative medicine, research is underway to understand how rete ridges form in the skin, potentially leading to advancements in skin regeneration, according to Nature.
The field of artificial intelligence has also seen rapid progress. Mistral AI developed a new speech-to-text model, and Kilo created an AI coding tool, according to multiple Nature reports.
However, the rapid pace of scientific advancement also presents challenges. Recent reports also highlighted quality control issues, including CPU identification errors and corrections to figures in a Nature publication. Specifically, Extended Data Fig. 4d in a Nature article published on August 29, 2018, was inadvertently presented as a partial duplicate of Extended Data Fig. 2a, and the strains in both panels were partially misannotated. According to Nature, this error occurred during figure preparation because assays for multiple strains were performed together on the same petri dish, sharing a wild-type control. The corrected figures are now available. Despite this error, Nature reported that the corrections did not affect the overall results of the study.
These developments demonstrate both the potential of scientific innovation and the ongoing need for vigilance in maintaining accuracy and rigor in research and technology.
