Microsoft confirmed it provided BitLocker recovery keys to law enforcement in a federal investigation tied to alleged COVID-19 unemployment fraud in Guam, according to Fox News. This action allowed investigators to unlock encrypted data on multiple laptops. This instance marked one of the clearest public examples of Microsoft assisting authorities in accessing encrypted information, challenging the long-held belief that encryption guarantees absolute privacy. For years, encryption was considered the "gold standard" for digital privacy, protecting data from unauthorized access, Fox News reported.
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice (DOJ) was taking a firm stance against anti-ICE protesters. Federal prosecutors charged more than 150 protesters in Minnesota with crimes ranging from obstruction of federal agents to FACE Act violations, Fox News reported. These offenses carry penalties ranging from fines to years in prison. The DOJ's actions suggested a nationwide strategy to aggressively prosecute similar conduct.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also found itself in a dispute with The New York Times over a report alleging that ICE was targeting pregnant women in Minneapolis. DHS rebuked the Times, stating the outlet "should be embarrassed" for publishing a video report titled "Pregnant Women in Minneapolis Hiding From ICE Face Impossible Choice," Fox News reported. The report claimed ICE was targeting hospitals for deportation operations.
The New York Times also highlighted the case of Judeson P., who was apprehended by federal agents in a Minneapolis suburb while on his way to pick up his paycheck. According to the Times, Judeson P. was grabbed from his vehicle, forced onto the icy pavement, and taken to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility. He was later transferred to a migrant shelter in El Paso, Texas, over 1,300 miles away. Judeson P. told the New York Times, "I cry every day."
These incidents collectively underscored the complex and often contentious relationship between government agencies, technology companies, and individuals concerning data privacy, immigration enforcement, and freedom of expression.
