AI Takes Center Stage at Super Bowl LX Amidst Industry Tensions
Artificial intelligence is poised to be a major focus during Super Bowl LX, with AI-related advertisements taking a prominent role during the commercial breaks. The game, featuring the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, is scheduled for Sunday, February 8th, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, kicking off at 6:30 PM ET (3:30 PM PT), according to The Verge.
The increased presence of AI in Super Bowl advertising comes as the technology continues to gain traction and generate both excitement and controversy. Last year's Super Bowl featured a Google Gemini ad, and this year will include an ad for Anthropic's AI platform that takes jabs at its competitors, namely OpenAI, The Verge reported.
Anthropic's Super Bowl ad campaign, which includes four commercials, two of which will air during the game, has sparked a reaction from OpenAI. The ads mock the idea of including ads in AI chatbot conversations, a move OpenAI recently began testing in a lower-cost tier of its ChatGPT chatbot, Ars Technica reported.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch voiced their criticism on X. Altman called Anthropic's ads "clearly dishonest" and accused the company of being "authoritarian," also stating that it "serves an expensive product to rich people," according to Ars Technica. Rouch wrote, "Real betrayal isn't ads. It's control."
The focus on AI in Super Bowl LX commercials reflects the growing importance and pervasiveness of the technology in various aspects of life. While the game itself will feature the Seahawks and Patriots, and Bad Bunny will headline the halftime show, AI is expected to be a major talking point during the breaks.
