UK House Prices Surpass £300,000 for the First Time
The average UK property price exceeded £300,000 for the first time, according to Halifax, the UK's largest mortgage lender. The lender reported that the average UK property price rose to £300,077 in January, a "milestone" that could be daunting for first-time buyers.
Despite the record high, Halifax indicated that wage growth had outstripped house price inflation since 2022, potentially improving affordability. Lenders have also been competing for first-time buyers by offering products with smaller deposit requirements. The Bank of England hinted at potential interest rate cuts later this year, which could further lower mortgage rates.
Pandora to Shift Away From Silver Due to Price Surge
Jewellery retailer Pandora announced plans to reduce its reliance on silver and incorporate platinum-plating in some of its ranges due to a dramatic increase in silver prices. Silver prices have more than doubled in the past year, mirroring surges in other precious metals like gold. Berta de Pablos-Barbier, Pandora's chief executive, stated that the company aims to reduce silver usage to approximately 25% of its goods to mitigate exposure to the metal's volatility. Currently, the Danish firm manufactures the majority of its products from silver. While platinum is more expensive per ounce than silver, Pandora believes the switch will be beneficial in the long run.
Software Stocks Face Investor Skepticism Amid AI Boom
A shift in investor sentiment occurred this week as investors began questioning the value of corporate software and IT services in light of advancements in artificial intelligence. According to Deutsche Bank, this trend evokes memories of the late 1990s when the dotcom bubble began to burst. Analysts noted that investors are rotating through to other sectors instead of significantly dropping. The AI boom, most analysts agree, is not the same as the dotcom bubble and its subsequent pop. This weeks shift away from IT and SaaS (Software as a Service) assets was in relation to an update from Anthropic, which launched plug-ins for its Claude Cowork agent last week.

Ukrainian University Relocates Due to Conflict
Viktoriya Voropayeva, a systems engineer and vice-rector at the Donetsk National Technology University (DonNTU), recounted the experience of relocating the university after Russian-backed forces took control of Donetsk in 2014. "I will never forget that Saturday evening when I first saw Russian tanks on the streets of my city," Voropayeva said. The university initially relocated to Drohobych in western Ukraine, hoping the displacement would be temporary. DonNTU had to leave its second location in Pokrovsk after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
