Four people have died and three others required liver transplants in California after consuming death cap mushrooms, according to the California Department of Public Health. The department is urging people to avoid mushroom foraging altogether this year due to the poisonous nature of the mushrooms, which are easily confused with edible varieties.
The death cap mushroom, one of the world's most poisonous, has proliferated in California following a rainy winter, leading to more than three dozen reported cases of poisoning since November 18, according to CBS News. Victims, ranging in age from 19 months to 67 years old, suffered from acute liver injury and liver failure, with several requiring intensive care.
