Apple is reportedly developing the capability for CarPlay users to interact with their preferred AI chatbots, including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, according to a report by Bloomberg. This update would allow drivers to access these AI applications through voice control, potentially streamlining interactions while on the road.
CarPlay, an application that mirrors select iPhone apps on a vehicle's infotainment system, currently allows users to interact with features like Apple Music, messaging, and navigation via Siri. The next-generation CarPlay Ultra expands this functionality to include the central touchscreen display and digital dashboard, offering control over certain vehicle settings. The integration of AI chatbots would mark a significant advancement, potentially enabling drivers to ask questions, receive information, and manage tasks hands-free.
The move comes as AI technology continues to gain prominence. Recent Super Bowl advertisements showcased the growing influence of AI, with brands like Svedka Vodka utilizing AI to create commercials. The 30-second ad, titled "Shake Your Bots Off," featured the company's robot character, Fembot, and her new companion, Brobot.
Meanwhile, Anthropic is also making strides in the AI field. WordPress launched a new Claude connector, enabling site owners to share back-end data with Anthropic's chatbot system. Users can control which data they share and revoke access as needed. Claude is given read-only access, preventing it from altering the user's CMS. Anthropic also demonstrated its AI coding capabilities by tasking 16 instances of its Claude Opus 4.6 AI model with building a C compiler from scratch. Over two weeks and nearly 2,000 Claude Code sessions, the AI model agents produced a 10,000-line C compiler, costing approximately $20,000 in API fees.
"CarPlay users could soon be able to use their chatbot of choice instead of Siri," reported The Verge, citing the Bloomberg report. This potential update would eliminate the need for users to access third-party chatbots through their iPhones, allowing for a more integrated and voice-controlled experience.
