Former President Donald Trump reversed his stance and endorsed Nexstar Media Group's $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna, a deal that requires regulatory approval, according to a post on Truth Social on Saturday. Trump's endorsement comes after he previously opposed the deal.
"We need more competition against THE ENEMY, the Fake News National TV Networks," the former president wrote, adding that "good deals" like Nexstar's purchase of Tegna will "help knock out the Fake News because there will be more competition." He further stated, "Those that are opposed don't fully understand how good the concept of this Deal is for them, but they will in the future. GET THAT DEAL DONE!"
The acquisition, announced in August, would merge two companies with substantial holdings in local broadcast media, expanding Nexstar's reach in U.S. television and local news landscapes.
In other news, documents released among the so-called Epstein files revealed that U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Jeffrey Epstein were in business together as recently as 2014, despite Lutnick's claims of "limited interactions" with Epstein. According to documents, Lutnick and Epstein signed a contract on December 28, 2012, on behalf of limited liability companies to acquire stakes in Adfin, a now-shuttered advertising technology company. Epstein signed for his Southern Trust Company, Inc., while Lutnick signed for a limited liability company called CVAFH I. The contract listed nine shareholders in total.
A federal judge ordered the U.S. government to return three migrant families affected by the family separation policy during President Trump's first administration who were then deported under his second, declaring the deportations "unlawful." U.S. District Court Judge Dana Sabraw, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, ruled that the deportations violated a court settlement designed to provide certain benefits to those affected by the policy of forcibly separating migrant children from their parents along the U.S.-Mexico border. The policy was scrapped in 2018 amid legal challenges and public outcry. In 2023, the Biden administration entered into a court settlement.
