Crypto.com founder Kris Marszalek made history by purchasing the domain AI.com for a record-breaking $70 million, according to the Financial Times, a move set to debut during the Super Bowl. The purchase, paid entirely in cryptocurrency, surpasses all previous domain name sales and signals a significant investment in the future of artificial intelligence.
Marszalek plans to unveil the site during the Super Bowl, offering consumers a personal AI agent for messaging, app usage, and stock trading, according to TechCrunch. The deal was facilitated by broker Larry Fischer. Marszalek told the Financial Times, "If you take a long-term view – 10 to 20 years – AI is going to be one of the greatest technological waves of our lifetime."
The use of AI was also a prominent theme in this year's Super Bowl advertisements. Brands like Svedka Vodka showcased AI in their multimillion-dollar ad spots, following a trend from the previous year, according to TechCrunch. Svedka's 30-second ad, titled "Shake Your Bots Off," featured the company's robot character, Fembot, and her new companion, Brobot.
In other AI-related news, the Indian government updated its startup framework, doubling the period for which deep tech companies are treated as startups to 20 years, according to TechCrunch. The revenue threshold for startup-specific tax, grant, and regulatory benefits was also raised to 3 billion rupees (about $33.12 million), from 1 billion rupees (around $11.04 million) previously. This adjustment aims to align policy timelines with the long development cycles typical of science- and engineering-led businesses.
Waymo, the Alphabet-owned self-driving company, is also expanding its robotaxi services, according to TechCrunch. The company now operates in six markets and plans to add more than a dozen new cities internationally, including London and Tokyo, fueled by $16 billion in funding.
