Crypto.com made history by purchasing the domain AI.com for a record-breaking $70 million, according to TechCrunch, just in time for the Super Bowl. The deal, paid entirely in cryptocurrency to an unknown seller, was facilitated by broker Larry Fischer. The company plans to debut the site during the big game, offering consumers a personal AI agent for messaging, app usage, and stock trading.
The purchase of AI.com shatters previous domain records, a move that aligns with the crypto industry's history of significant spending, according to TechCrunch. Crypto.com founder Kris Marszalek told the Financial Times that he believes AI will be "one of the greatest technological waves of our lifetime," taking a long-term view of 10 to 20 years.
The Super Bowl LX, featuring the Seattle Seahawks versus the New England Patriots, saw AI take center stage in the commercial breaks, much like crypto did a few years prior, according to The Verge. Advertisements leveraged AI both to create commercials and promote the latest AI products, as reported by TechCrunch. Svedka Vodka, for example, aired what it touted as the first primarily AI-generated national Super Bowl spot, titled "Shake Your Bots Off."
However, not all AI-related news surrounding the Super Bowl was authentic. A "leaked" ad for OpenAI, featuring actor Alexander Skarsgård and a ChatGPT hardware gadget, was revealed to be a hoax, according to The Verge.
The game also included an ad for Anthropic's AI platform, which took jabs at its competitors, namely OpenAI, according to The Verge. The Super Bowl LX was broadcast on NBC and Peacock on Sunday, February 8th, with the game kicking off at 6:30 PM ET.
