At least three people died and six others were injured when a car crashed into a supermarket in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, while authorities are investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie, and a student was shot at a high school in Maryland on Monday.
The car crash occurred shortly after noon at a 99 Ranch Market in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). Aerial footage showed the vehicle lodged inside the supermarket. Firefighters pronounced three people dead at the scene. The victims were identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as 42-year-old Deris Renoj, 52-year-old Leonel Mateo, and 28-year-old Zih Dao. 99 Ranch Market stated that the victims were two employees and a customer, and the store would remain closed for the immediate future.
Meanwhile, the search for Nancy Guthrie, who was last seen on Saturday night, January 31, continues into its second week. Authorities believe she was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona. Her family is pleading for her return. Savannah Guthrie has directly appealed to whoever may have taken her mother. The FBI is taking two emails seriously, including what appears to be a ransom note with a second deadline set for later on Monday, according to CBS News. As a possible deadline passed Monday for the family to pay a ransom, experts said law enforcement appeared to still be trying to determine if the real kidnappers were behind the demands, according to ABC News.
In other news, a student was shot inside Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland, on Monday, according to Montgomery County police. One person is in custody in connection with the shooting, and the school was placed on lockdown.
Also on Monday, the U.S. military struck its 39th alleged drug-carrying boat, killing two people and leaving one survivor, who is now the focus of a search-and-rescue effort. The military's Southern Command said the vessel was "operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations" and "engaged in narco-trafficking operations." The U.S. Coast Guard was notified about a "person in distress," and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center Ecuador is organizing a search-and-rescue effort for the person, according to CBS News.
