The FBI released images of a masked person in connection to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of news anchor Savannah Guthrie, while US lawmakers accused the Department of Justice of improperly redacting files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to reports. The developments come as the UK's National Health Service (NHS) advertised a nursing role focused on supporting families involved in "close-relative marriage."
The FBI is seeking to identify the masked individual, who they say was armed, more than eight days after Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home on January 31st, according to BBC World. Savannah Guthrie stated on Monday that her family believes their mother is still alive and issued an appeal for information.
Meanwhile, US lawmakers are scrutinizing the redactions in the Epstein files. Members of Congress began reviewing the unredacted versions of approximately three million pages of files released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act (EFTA) since December. "The core issue is that they're not complying with... my law, because these were scrubbed back in March by Donald Trump's FBI," said Democratic congressman Ro Khanna, according to BBC World. At least one document has been unredacted since the lawmakers' complaint.
The Epstein files have also revealed details of his efforts to build ties with Russian officials, including those he hoped might facilitate a meeting with President Vladimir V. Putin, according to the New York Times. In 2014, Epstein befriended Sergei L. Belyakov, then a deputy minister of economic development. The Kremlin has seized on the release of the files, saying the details underscore the moral depravity of the West, according to the NY Times.
The files also shed light on Epstein's connections to prominent figures. Peter Mandelson, then Britain's Secretary of State for Business, requested to stay at Epstein's mansion in 2009, according to the NY Times. Epstein also emailed Jes Staley, then a senior executive at JPMorgan, suggesting a meeting with Mandelson and Jamie Dimon, the bank's C.E.O.
In the UK, the NHS advertised a nursing role focused on supporting families involved in "close-relative marriage," a practice linked to higher genetic risks for children, according to Fox News. The full-time position, titled "Neonatal Nurse - Close Relative Marriage," aimed to support families through "informed reproductive decision-making." The role has since closed.
