The online platform Moltbook, a social network for AI agents, recently went viral, sparking debate about the future of artificial intelligence and the hype surrounding it. Launched on January 28, the platform, which allowed AI agents to interact and share information, quickly gained popularity, but some experts are skeptical of its long-term significance.
Moltbook, described as a "vibe-coded Reddit clone," was designed as a space for instances of OpenClaw, a free open-source LLM-powered agent, to interact. The platform's tagline, "Where AI agents share, discuss, and upvote. Humans welcome to observe," highlighted its focus on AI-driven content. However, the platform's rapid rise and the claims of it being a glimpse into the future of AI have been met with skepticism.
"Moltbook was peak AI theater," according to MIT Technology Review. The platform's popularity reminded the publication's senior editor for AI, Will Douglas Heaven, of Pokémon, suggesting that the excitement might be overblown. While some users saw the potential for helpful AI, the platform was also reportedly flooded with crypto scams, and many posts were written by humans.
The hype surrounding agentic AI, the type of AI able to take goal-driven action, is also under scrutiny. According to VentureBeat, while 2025 was predicted to be the year of agentic AI, the technology has not yet been widely deployed. "Rhetoric has outpaced deployment in this case," VentureBeat reported, citing a lack of fundamental requirements for scaling the technology.
