A remote town in British Columbia, Canada, was shaken by a deadly shooting on Tuesday that left nine people dead at a school and residence, according to the New York Times. The shooter then died of a self-inflicted injury. Meanwhile, in the Mediterranean Sea, a migrant boat capsized off the Libyan coast on Friday, leaving 53 people dead or missing, the UN migration agency reported.
The shooting occurred in Tumbler Ridge, a town of approximately 2,400 residents near the Alberta border, nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the New York Times reported. The town is known for its remoteness, with cellphone service cutting out shortly after leaving town, as Danielle Roscher, owner of a local outdoor tour company, described. The attacks were particularly unsettling against this backdrop, she said, adding that it "doesn't even seem real."
The International Organization for Migration reported that the migrant boat capsized north of Zuwara. Only two survivors were rescued. Hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers have died attempting to cross the central Mediterranean route already this year, The Guardian reported.
In other news, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned a "menacing" Disney advert featuring a severed body, according to BBC Business. The advert, for the Predator Badlands film, was deemed likely to frighten and cause distress to children. Parents complained that the digital poster, which featured an alien holding the severed body of a human figure, was "inappropriate and disturbing for young children." Disney argued the severed body was that of a robot.
Also, some senior managers at the Co-op have complained of a "toxic culture" at the executive level, according to BBC Business. A letter to Co-op board members complained of "fear and alienation" among senior staff who felt scared to raise concerns about the business's direction. Several sources said they felt a culture that discourages any challenge has led to poor decisions, resulting in sinking morale and a sharp drop in profits.
