A growing movement urging users to cancel their ChatGPT subscriptions is gaining traction, fueled by user dissatisfaction and concerns over OpenAI's actions, including perceived political connections. The "QuitGPT" campaign, which gained momentum after a Reddit post, is calling on users to end their subscriptions to the AI chatbot, citing issues with its coding abilities and meandering replies, as well as concerns about OpenAI's ties to political figures and government agencies.
According to MIT Technology Review, the campaign specifically flagged a substantial contribution by OpenAI president Greg Brockman to President Donald Trump's super PAC MAGA Inc. The campaign also pointed out that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uses a résumé screening tool powered by ChatGPT-4. This federal agency has become a political flashpoint since its agents fatally shot two people in Minneapolis in January.
The movement's rise comes amid other developments in the tech world. Microsoft is updating Secure Boot certificates for Windows devices to maintain system security, while Google is testing a change on YouTube Music that limits free users' access to lyrics, potentially requiring a premium subscription, according to Wired. Discord will soon implement mandatory age verification globally, requiring users to submit a face scan or ID to access adult content, as reported by BBC Technology.
The "QuitGPT" campaign highlights the growing scrutiny of AI platforms and their potential impact. Alfred Stephen, a freelance software developer in Singapore, who subscribed to ChatGPT Plus for $20 a month to speed up his work, expressed his frustration with the chatbot's performance, according to MIT Technology Review. He found the chatbot's coding abilities lacking and its responses verbose.
The annual Governors' meeting is also marked by political discord, according to MIT Technology Review. Meanwhile, Sky and Disney have inked a multi-year distribution deal that will see the broadcaster offer Disney to Sky customers in the U.K. and Ireland at no extra cost as well as offering a streaming bundle including HBO Max, Netflix and Hayu, according to Variety.
