Canada School Massacre: Police ID 18-Year-Old Suspect

Canadian police identified the suspect in a mass shooting at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, a local resident. The attack on Tuesday resulted in nine deaths, including the suspect, a teacher, and five students, making it one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history.

According to the Guardian, the incident began at the suspect's family residence, where the suspect's mother and step-brother were found deceased. Police were then called to the high school after a female youth, related to the suspect and victims, contacted authorities. The suspect then opened fire at the school, killing a 39-year-old teacher and three 12-year-old female students. A female victim with significant injuries survived and remained in critical condition. More than 25 people were injured, including two with life-threatening injuries.

Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald confirmed the suspect's identity and that the death toll was revised to nine, including the suspect. The Guardian reported that the suspect had a history of mental health problems.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) took up position outside the suspect's home, where additional bodies were found. The incident prompted a response from Canadian officials, with Mark Carney speaking to the media in Ottawa.

In other news, the US House voted to rescind tariffs that Donald Trump imposed on Canada last year, a rare bipartisan rebuke of the White House's trade policy. The largely symbolic resolution passed 219 to 211.
