Chloe Kim, the U.S. snowboarder, celebrated a silver medal finish in the women's Olympic halfpipe event in Livigno, Italy on Thursday, despite being bested by her teenage protégé, Gaon Choi, in her quest for a historic three-peat. Kim's joyful reaction to the silver medal at the Milano Cortina Games was particularly noteworthy, given that she had been unsure if she would even be able to compete due to a torn labrum.
According to NPR News, Kim's Olympic dreams were foiled by her protégé. Kim had previously won gold in PyeongChang in 2018 and Beijing four years ago. The silver medal, however, may wind up meaning more to her than her previous golds, as she stated, "I mean, a month ago, I wasn't even sure if I would be here."
The competition took place at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Kim had finished first in qualifying earlier in the week, seemingly overcoming the effects of a dislocated left shoulder she suffered in January.
In other news, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is expected to shut down Saturday as lawmakers have yet to reach a funding agreement. According to NPR News, the DHS, which houses agencies focused on immigration, disaster response, and cybersecurity, is at risk due to the failure of Democrats and Republicans to agree on a deal. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters Thursday that while a deal space is present, the two parties were "not close."
