Netflix has secured the U.S. rights to the upcoming "Lord of the Flies" series, a project from "Adolescence" co-creator Jack Thorne, according to Variety. The deal was announced by Sony Pictures Television on February 13, 2026.
The news comes as the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin kicked off, with a focus on love stories and romance-driven films, as reported by Variety. The market is seeing a surge in films about relationships, hoping to attract buyers. One of the leading titles is the rom-com "Hello Paris," featuring Javier Bardem and Kate Hudson.
Spanish director Ian de la Rosa's debut feature, "Iván & Hadoum," also premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, described as "a classic love story with characters who are anything but classic," according to Variety. The film's inspiration came from a striking image from a 1987 sci-fi thriller.
Este Haim, who is in Berlin for the indie film "Sunny Dancer," for which she wrote the score, expressed her aspirations to compose music for Paul Thomas Anderson, stating, "If Jonny Greenwood happens to retire, I'll be right there," as reported by Variety.
The focus on love stories at the EFM contrasts with the historical understanding of some literary works. For example, when teaching Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights," Sam Hirst, a lecturer in English literature at the University of Liverpool, noted that students often misinterpret the novel as a romance, when it is actually a "nightmare" of domestic abuse. Early reviews of "Wuthering Heights" found it disturbing and violent, with the first film adaptation advertising itself as a "Story of Hate," according to Time.
