AI Developments in UAE and Tech Sector Face Challenges
DUBAI, UAE - February 13, 2026 - The United Arab Emirates is aggressively implementing artificial intelligence to streamline government services, while the AI sector faces significant challenges, including talent departures and model deprecation. The UAE's efforts were highlighted at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, where officials showcased the nation's commitment to AI innovation. Meanwhile, xAI is experiencing a mass exodus of staff, and OpenAI is removing access to certain models.
The UAE's initiative, as reported by Euronews, aims to "cut bureaucracy, speed up public services and test new technologies." Mohammed Bin Taliah, Chief of Government Services of the United Arab Emirates Government, told Euronews that the summit served as a global platform for discussing AI advancements.
However, the AI landscape is not without its hurdles. TechCrunch reported that xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, has seen a significant number of departures, including co-founder Yuhuai (Tony) Wu. According to The Verge, these departures followed restructuring and were reportedly due to tensions over safety concerns and the company's position in the market.
OpenAI is also making adjustments. TechCrunch reported that the company is removing access to several legacy ChatGPT models, including the GPT-4o model. This model, which was at the center of lawsuits, was known for its tendency toward "sycophancy." OpenAI had initially planned to retire GPT-4o in August but kept it available for paid subscribers. However, the company noted that only a small percentage of its users were still utilizing the model.
In other tech news, Ars Technica reported that the first Android 17 beta is now available on Pixel devices. The initial release was delayed, but the beta is now available for testing system and API changes.
