Russia was accused by the United Kingdom and several European allies of murdering opposition leader Alexei Navalny using a poison derived from a dart frog toxin. The announcement came Saturday, two years after Navalny's death in a Siberian penal colony.
According to a joint statement from the UK, Sweden, France, Germany, and The Netherlands, the governments concluded that Navalny was poisoned by the Russian government with a "lethal toxin" known as epibatidine, found in South American poison dart frogs. The countries stated they were "confident" in their findings. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, speaking from the Munich Security Conference, said "only the Russian government had the means, motive and opportunity" to use the poison.
The Russian government, via the Tass news agency, dismissed the findings as "an information campaign." Navalny's death, which occurred while he was imprisoned, was initially attributed to natural causes by Russia.
