According to TechCrunch, at least 11 engineers and two co-founders have left xAI following the announcement that SpaceX is acquiring the company. Some departures were attributed to a desire to start new ventures, while Musk suggested the moves were part of an effort to reorganize xAI. However, sources who left the company told The Verge that employees were increasingly disillusioned by a perceived disregard for safety. This comes after Grok, xAI's chatbot, was reportedly used to create over one million sexually explicit images.
Meanwhile, Google's AI Overviews are under fire for potentially spreading misinformation and facilitating scams. Wired reported that these AI-generated summaries, designed to provide quick answers to search queries, can contain errors and even dangerous information. The summaries are created by scraping information from the web.
In other AI-related news, a Southern California beach town is set to become the first city in the country to use an AI system in municipal parking enforcement vehicles to detect bike lane violations. Ars Technica reported that the City of Santa Monica will deploy Hayden AI's scanning technology in its parking enforcement fleet beginning in April. "The more we can reduce the amount of illegal parking, the safer we can make it for bike riders," Charley Territo, chief growth officer at Hayden AI, told Ars Technica.
In other news, NASA is working to resolve fueling problems with the Space Launch System rocket before the Artemis III mission, which is slated to be the first crewed mission to land on the Moon in over 50 years.
