US Boards Venezuela Tanker; Cuba Crisis Deepens
Drawing from multiple news sources, U.S. forces boarded the Panamanian-flagged oil tanker Veronica III in the Indian Ocean, which was carrying Venezuelan oil and had been tracked from the Caribbean Sea. The boarding, part of an effort to enforce sanctions and interdict illicit oil, occurred after the vessel attempted to evade a quarantine ordered by the U.S. government. The Veronica III, linked to Venezuelan, Iranian, and Russian oil, departed Venezuela on January 3rd, the same day as Maduro's capture, carrying nearly 2 million barrels of crude and fuel oil.
